THE PRACTICE OF BEING TOGETHER with Theresa-Xuan Bui

  • Craigardan 9216 New York 9N Elizabethtown, NY, 12932 United States (map)

6 pm - 7 pm | July 27, August 3rd + 10th

Amid the turbulence of an ever-changing America, there is an urgency for empathy. The poet and performance artist will deliver a three-part series exploring how the nuances of our nation provide an opportunity to understand the complexity of our individual narratives.

Theresa will discuss their interdisciplinary work which seeks to understand the self within larger power structures, namely experiences surrounding the ideals of America and immigrant households. They will describe their investment in performance as a process of somatic knowledge — the ways in which memory, trauma, and wisdom are carried within our bodies. Utilizing a series of embodiment exercises, Theresa will guide participants in a contemplation of the self through performative movements and reflective prompts. In connection with Craigardan’s mission of interdisciplinary learning, new questions and initiatives, this series will unearth the through-line between our individual narratives and collective environment.

Location: Main Campus. Look for Craigardan Event sign at the end of Main Campus driveway (two “doors” west of the farm store, towards Keene).

REGISTRATION

$30 per person for 3 sessions

Theresa-Xuan Bui (they/them), is a queer non-binary Vietnamese-American artist questioning the intersections of the personal and political as a means to critically imagine the future. Through drawing and dancing, they translate their embodied practice into performances of language and sound. They are a princess of the Bui household, a legacy of Vietnamese refugees and vanguard Asian-Americans. Born and raised in Bronx, NY, Theresa moved to Houston, TX before pursuing a BFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MIC/A). Beyond their artistic practice, they love listening to poetry podcasts, learning about sustainability, brainstorming ontological concepts, belting power ballads, and talking about love.
